Breakaway
Conflict Resolution

A journey into one of the wrist grab's disengagement procedure

​The theory of breakaway is to create a window of opportunity giving staff a chance to seek assistance or to allow time to re-assess the situation.

Course Outline

  • This is a competency-based course structured / developed and delivered over a theory & a physical sub-module, and as such the participant will be continuously assessed for the duration of the physical module of the course. 

  • The participant is required to achieve a PASS in all areas of the course to receive a certificate of competency. 

  • A test of knowledge will be completed and submitted by each candidate either after the theoretical sub-module or at the end of the course.

  • Please note that based on your / healthcare provider's TNA (Training Needs Analysis), this course doesn't have a fixed timeframe for the delivery of its content.  It all depends of your healthcare provider's circumstances.

  • The course lenght varies, depending on each organisation's TNA

Course Objectives

To achieve the aims of this course, the participant will demonstrate understanding and consistency in the following areas:

  • Personal Safety – including the I.S.E. risk assessments and N.E.A.R. principles

  • Personal space and spatial awareness

  • The Reactionary Gap & the Fighting Arc

  • The Use of Reasonable Force

  • Behaviours that are Challenging the Service

  • Anger, Aggression and Violence

  • The Implementation of The Public Health Model in line with the Assault Cycle Model and PBS principles

  • De-escalation

  • Human Rights Based Approach

  • Trauma Informed Care

  • Breakaway physical skills

The Assessment Process

The Physical Skills assessment method is that of continuous assessment during the physical module of the course that will be concluded by each participant with a brief demonstration towards the end of the course. 

The participant must achieve a PASS mark in all areas to achieve certification of competency. These areas are as follows:

  • Theoretical Knowledge

  • Professionalism (including approach and attitude)

  • Communication skills

  • Observation Skills

  • Physical Skills

  • Safety Elements to be employed: safety stance, protective hand(s), talking hands

 

The process is designed to support the participant throughout the course. The course tutors will provide feedback to the participant as required or requested by the individual.
